I like her because she’s weird, in an awesome way. The way she pronounces things when speaking and singing is intriguing to me. Her new album is much better than it’s getting credit for being (“Radio” and “Lucky Ones” are personal favorites). A lot of people are wrong right now about Lana Del Rey. Besides, there is enough acapella evidence of her vocal ability in this video to counter any complaints that “she can’t sing.”
Saw a really good documentary about Joe Namath over the weekend. Who was cooler than Broadway Joe in his prime? But he had a similar thing going on with how he spoke, the way his words sound; it probably was a combination of growing up in rural Pennsylvania and then going down south to Alabama to play college ball, but if you ever heard him talk, you’ll always recognize his voice when you hear it. Very similar vibe, in many respects.
The internet is amateur hour for bullshit rock-crit blahblah. Some of y’all really should know better, I swear. Still, I can’t recall anyone in recent music history that has gotten so many people stirred up one way or the other. I look forward to hearing the work LDR does from here on out, when all this hype and craziness dies down and we can just enjoy her unique voice for what it is.
